SUMMARY:Regular Buckthorn Removal Days
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to a grant through the Minnesota DNR and the Minnesota Legacy Fund\, we are working to get rid of all the buckthorn in Sunfish Lake Park. We contract with Stantec to clear large areas with heavy machinery\, but there are some areas that can’t be easily accessed by vehicles where volunteers can participate on foot by clearing invasives or planting native species. On the second Saturday of every month\, we get a crew together to go out and perform this vital work. We have the loppers and gloves\, bring your energy\, and we can offer you free fresh air and exercise. Work starts at 9:30\, and we can find something for all ages and abilities!

SUMMARY:Got Buckthorn?
DESCRIPTION:Buckthorn is that invasive tree and shrub that is harming our native habitats.  You will learn how to identify both types of buckthorn and removal techniques\, including chemical and chemical-free control.   This class is timely because fall is the absolute best time for buckthorn control.  This class is taught by Washington County Master Gardeners Kim Dupre and Jane Tyler. \nKim Dupre & Jane Tyler:  After retiring from her IT career\, Kim returned to her farm roots and became a certified University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener in 2019. Kim and her husband own a 37 acre wooded property and deal with invasive species regularly\, especially buckthorn. Jane\, also an IT retiree\, has lived in northern Washington County for decades and has worked with DNR and others in clearing the buckthorn from her property\, becoming a University of Minnesota Master Gardener and Tree Care Advisor in 2022.

SUMMARY:Fall Fundraiser\, feat. Colton Warren
DESCRIPTION:Come out and enjoy a beautiful autumn afternoon at the SMINC! As we come to the end of our fiscal year\, we’re putting on one more fundraiser for the center. We’ll have food\, games and crafts for the kids\, and music by local musician Colton Warren. Suggested donation for admission is $5 per person\, payable at the event. All profits from ticket and food sales benefit the nature center. \nColton Warren is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from the Twin Cities area who embraces a variety of musical styles. In the vein of Jack Johnson and The Lumineers\, Colton uses his six string guitar and rich baritone voice to create music that sounds like waves\, whiskey and wanderlust. Colton also integrates his 12 string guitar into live sets\, building an atmospheric sound that is both soothing and vibrant. Whatever the instrument\, his songs are crafted to inspire listeners in their own creativity.
