SUMMARY:Sally's Nature School Homeschool Program: The Importance of Prairies (Nature Explorers Program)
DESCRIPTION:Home school sessions are open to all families interested in nature-based learning opportunities. Sessions are in two parts. During the first session\, older students (11 and older)\, or “Nature Buddies\,” learn curriculum material in preparation for the second session\, during which they will act as lesson-leaders and teaching assistants for younger students. The second session\, typically one week later\, is open to all ages\, but focuses on younger learners\, with older students assist in delivering lesson material. \n\nAll ages are welcome\, but we focus and only charge for children 5+ years-old (the main program for 5 – 10 yr. olds and the Nature Buddy program for 11+).\nThere will be an area for toddlers to hang out.\nNature Buddy must be 11 years old by the date of the program.\nNature Buddy should be available for both program dates.\nIf your child is older than 10 yrs. old and is not a nature buddy\, they will still have a great time!\nThe donation fee is $12/child.\nEach program runs for 2 hours – Nature Buddies: 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.; Sally’s Nature Explorers: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.\nThere will be seating for parents (thank you to the person for that feedback!)\nBring a snack for the kiddos\, there will be a snack time about half-way through the program.\n\nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to Verity at verity.davis@sminc-lake-elmo.org. \nIn this session of Sally’s Nature School we are going to talk about the prairie and why the ecosystem is important. We are also going to learn about prairie plants\, seeds and the animals that live in them. We will be outside and\, in the prairie\, if the weather cooperates so wearing long pants and closed-toed shoes would be best. \nOctober 3\, Nature Buddies (11 and up) meet from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. (to register for this session click here); October 10\, Nature Explorers (all ages) meet from 10 a.m. to noon (to register for this session click here). $12 per student.

SUMMARY:Got Buckthorn?
DESCRIPTION:Buckthorn is that invasive tree and shrub that is harming our native habitats.  You will learn how to identify both types of buckthorn and removal techniques\, including chemical and chemical-free control.   This class is timely because fall is the absolute best time for buckthorn control.  This class is taught by Washington County Master Gardeners Kim Dupre and Jane Tyler. \nKim Dupre & Jane Tyler:  After retiring from her IT career\, Kim returned to her farm roots and became a certified University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener in 2019. Kim and her husband own a 37 acre wooded property and deal with invasive species regularly\, especially buckthorn. Jane\, also an IT retiree\, has lived in northern Washington County for decades and has worked with DNR and others in clearing the buckthorn from her property\, becoming a University of Minnesota Master Gardener and Tree Care Advisor in 2022.

SUMMARY:Fall Fundraiser\, feat. Colton Warren
DESCRIPTION:Come out and enjoy a beautiful autumn afternoon at the SMINC! As we come to the end of our fiscal year\, we’re putting on one more fundraiser for the center. We’ll have food\, games and crafts for the kids\, and music by local musician Colton Warren. Come out\, enjoy the hiking and biking trails\, have some food and drink and listen to some fantastic tunes out on our patio! \nPizza by Lake Elmo’s Stable Pizzeria\, and sundaes with homemade fudge and caramel by our own Connie Kirk! Suggested donation for admission is $5 per person\, payable at the event. All profits from ticket and food sales benefit the nature center. \nColton Warren is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from the Twin Cities area who embraces a variety of musical styles. In the vein of Jack Johnson and The Lumineers\, Colton uses his six string guitar and rich baritone voice to create music that sounds like waves\, whiskey and wanderlust. Colton also integrates his 12 string guitar into live sets\, building an atmospheric sound that is both soothing and vibrant. Whatever the instrument\, his songs are crafted to inspire listeners in their own creativity.

On the second Saturday of every month\, we get a crew together to go out and perform this vital work. We have the loppers and gloves\, bring your energy\, and we can offer you free fresh air and exercise. Work starts at 9:30\, and we can find something for all ages and abilities!
